Origin and History of Artistry of Equipales

Posted by Marko Paul on

Equipales are originated from Jalisco, a state in mid-western Mexico.  The state of Jalisco is unique in the sense that it not only bares along the Pacific coast, but it also borders 8 other Mexican states including Nayarit, Zacatecas, Aguas Calientes, Guanajuato, Michoacan, Colima, San Luis Potosi, and Durango.  This region is abundant with many of the Mexican traditions that are known throughout the world.  Jalisco is the birthplace of world famous tequila and equipales furniture, among many other cultural treasures.  The word “equipal” comes from the Aztec Nahuatl word “ikpalli”, which means chair.

The process of building equipales is not only a matter of fabrication or carpentry; rather it is truly a form of art.  That is why equipales are so unique in design, structure, durability, comfort, and aesthetics.  These techniques have been passed on for centuries to our present day artisans without minimizing the original tradition of quality and craftsmanship.
